Introduction
This service is to be used by persons reporting death of an identity card holder and returning the identity card of the deceased for cancellation.
Important Note:
Under regulation 16 of the Registration of Persons Regulations, Chapter 177A, Laws of Hong Kong, upon the death of a person to whom an identity card was issued his identity card shall cease to be valid and the person in possession of his card shall deliver it within 30 days after the date of the death to the registration officer for cancellation.
In Person
Applicants should complete the “Return of Identity Card of Deceased Person” (form ROP 35a) together with the identity card of the deceased (if any) and the copy of the death certificate/document(s) and submit it to any of the Registration of Persons Office.

A reply letter to acknowledge the cancellation of the deceased’s identity card and the perforated identity card (if any) will be sent to the correspondence address as provided within 14 working days after all of the supporting documents received are in order.
Further time may be required depending on the complexity of the application, and the number of applications received at the same time.
