Immigration Department responds to media enquiries

5 October 2016

Regarding the incident in which a Chinese citizen holding a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport had been refused entry in Bangkok, Thailand, today (October 5), the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit of the Immigration Department (ImmD), upon learning about the incident, immediately sought to understand the situation through the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR (OCMFA), the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Thailand and the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Hong Kong.

Staff of the Embassy contacted the Thai authorities and were informed that the Chinese citizen concerned had indeed been refused entry by the authorities. While the Chinese citizen concerned was at the airport in Bangkok pending repatriation, staff of the Embassy requested the Thai authorities to ensure that the legitimate interests of the Chinese citizen concerned would be protected. ImmD will continue to keep close contact with the OCMFA and the Embassy to monitor the situation and provide practical assistance to the person concerned.

Hong Kong residents travelling outside Hong Kong who need assistance may call the 24-hour hotline of the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit of ImmD at (852) 1868.
